Topic 4 · TMS

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

All about TMS
Patient seated in a chair during a transcranial magnetic stimulation session
Where do I start?

Through the NeuroCheck: a free information session, with no obligation, with our Patient Care, Vanessa Kachinski. This is followed by the TMS Assessment Consultation with the clinical director, Dr. Bruno Gomes. Treatment depends on eligibility and a medical prescription, after the TMS Assessment Consultation.

What NeuroCheck involves
Does it hurt?

As a rule, no. TMS is a non-invasive treatment: you feel light tapping on the scalp and hear clicking sounds. The most common effects are mild headache, scalp discomfort and mild tiredness, mainly in the first sessions.

Who cannot have it?

It may not be suitable if you have metal implants in the head or neck (except dental), cochlear implants, brain or vagus nerve stimulators, or a history of epilepsy or seizures. Pacemakers, defibrillators and pregnancy are assessed by the doctor. Contraindications are reviewed at the TMS Assessment Consultation.

Can I drive?

Yes. There is no anaesthesia or sedation. You can drive and work straight afterwards.

Do I stop my medication?

No. TMS is carried out without stopping your usual medication. Any change should be decided together with your doctor.

How many sessions?

Between 6 and 30, as prescribed by the doctor after the TMS Assessment Consultation. Each session lasts between 18.5 and 24.5 minutes, depending on the protocol. You are supported by our clinical team, session after session.

What if it does not work?

The doctor reassesses midway through and at the end of the cycle. If the response is not as expected, they will discuss other treatment options with you.

From what age can I have it?

TMS is indicated for adults over 18, after the TMS Assessment Consultation.
