About

Background and approach

In his consultations, he always starts with the person, not the diagnosis. Listening properly, understanding the history, and only then deciding on the way forward.

Areas of interest

  • Depression
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Sleep problems
  • Neuromodulation with ExoTMS®
  • Medication review and adjustment
  • Follow-up of cases with poor response to previous treatments

When standard treatment is not enough

Many people with depression, anxious depression or OCD have already tried medication, psychotherapy or both. For some, that was enough. For others, the improvement fell short of expectations.

That does not mean there is nothing more to be done. It means it may be worth looking at the case again, with fresh eyes.

In certain situations, and after assessment, neuromodulation with ExoTMS® may be considered. It can be used alongside medication and psychotherapy, when clinically indicated.

A team, not a stand-alone treatment

Mental health is rarely resolved in a single consulting room. At AlmaraClinic, Dr. João Francisco Cunha works together with Dr. Bruno Gomes, from Internal Medicine, and with Psychotherapy, with Dr. Patrick Roque Teixeira.

Psychiatry assesses the mental side. Internal Medicine looks at the body. Together, they work out what may be contributing to how you feel and what the most appropriate path is.

Assessment for ExoTMS®

Before the treatment cycle, there is an assessment consultation. This is where we assess whether ExoTMS® may be suitable for you.

Your clinical history, symptoms, previous treatments and current medication are reviewed. We also assess whether there is any factor that might rule out neuromodulation.

What happens next

  1. Initial motor threshold session

The intensity is tailored to you.

  2. Treatment sessions

According to the protocol set for your case.

  3. Follow-up consultation

    To monitor progress.

Not everyone is eligible. When ExoTMS® is not the best option, the doctor explains why and refers you to the most appropriate path.
